“From Beginner to Nature Enthusiast: A Journey into the World
of Birdwatching”

I never considered birdwatching until one day our zoology teacher organized a birding trip, with Lyndon and Gracy accompanying us. During our outing, I was captivated by the incredible variety of birds we encountered. Instead of focusing entirely on identifying birds, it was prioritized to observe their features closely.

Initially, I struggled to use binoculars effectively, but with practice, I became expert. During our first birdwatching excursion in Nuvem, I wasn’t sure which features to pay attention to, but by our latest bird-watch in Raia, I had learned what to look for and could identify birds more easily using a guide.

Through these experiences, I learned about different bird species, such as wetland species, arboreal birds, and raptors, and why they are classified as such. I also discovered that the joy of birdwatching lies in observing rather than simply naming birds. The most thrilling part is encountering unexpected
species at the right moment.

Our initial bird-walk was part of our syllabus, but I was so fascinated by birdwatching that I volunteered for more bird walks. Previously, I had seen birds casually but had never been curious about them. Now, I find myself eager to learn more about birds , their feeding habits and habitats.

After our first bird-walk, I began observing birds around my house and in nearby fields. I was fortunate to spot rufous treepies, small minivets, greater racket-tailed drongos, red vented bulbuls and Indian grey hornbill. Previously, I would have been glued to my phone while traveling, but now I make a conscious effort to observe nature and the birds around me.

During a recent bus journey, I was stressed until I noticed painted storks feeding alongside egrets and other birds in a field. The sight was breathtaking, and observing the pink coloration on the storks’ backs provided relief from my stress. Now, whenever I see a bird, I try to observe it closely, seeking guidance if needed to learn more about it.

The impact of birdwatching surpassed mere hobby; it became a source of comfort amidst life’s stresses, prompting me to prioritize moments of calmness and appreciation for the natural world. Through this journey, I not only gained knowledge about birds but also cultivated a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of life around me.
